I got stuck with a position I never wanted and needed A LOT of guidance. I requested help on the website and they responded within an hour!!!! We e-mailed back and forth for an entire day. The lady really helped and was very patient with my ignorant questions. It has even resulted with her calling me to discuss issues even further.
We're an LLC headquartered in MD. We had a potential sale in TN, so we registered for a sales/use tax license to cover our bases. On the SAME DAY we received our license, we got a bill for $581.78. Tax (on something) for $500, $6.78 for interest on the tax on something, and $75 late fee for nonpayment of tax on "sales dating from 3 months before we even registered. On ZERO sales actually made.
On hold for over 45 minutes waiting to talk to someone unable to help. Separate call and on hold for 40 minutes more, lady requested an email with written request. Will follow up next week, but not looking like I can call up and ask her if she got my email.

I called them several times with questions because I'm a newbie. All the people I spoke with were very helpful, and answered all my questions patiently. Their level of expertise and professionalism far exceeds private industry giants like Comcast, Sprint, Walmart, etc. They exceeded my expectations, and I appreciate these state employees!
I agree with the other reviewers concerning the long wait times on the phone. So much so that I gave up on that route months ago. Have you tried the Contact option on their website though? It is so much faster PLUS you are communicating via email so you have a paper trail when you're done. I highly recommend this method. John @ TN Dept of Revenue is a ROCKSTAR! I just received a response to my inquiry 2, maybe 3, minutes of submitting. I've worked with him before on other tax matters and he's quite an asset to the department.

Registrations section successfully fixed the effective date on our account. Took two subsequent emails to get her to reply that she had received the original email she requested. Later spoke to her on the phone again, said I'd have to talk to a different section to reverse the charges on the account. Result: received a letter saying they closed the account entirely.
